About Parachute and Airbag Tarps
Parachute or airbag-fabric tarps are woven from a lightweight, coated nylon-type fabric similar to the material used in automotive airbags. They weigh a fraction of an equivalent vinyl tarp, fold smaller and are far easier to throw over a load — a big deal for drivers who tarp several times a week. The trade-off is that they are less abrasion-resistant than heavy vinyl, so edge protection matters.
- Roughly 40–60% lighter than 18 oz vinyl
- Folds compactly to save toolbox space
- Water-resistant coated fabric
- Lumber, steel and machinery cuts available
How to choose parachute and airbag tarps
- Protect the edges. Use corner protectors on every sharp edge — light fabric resists water well but not cutting.
Parachute and Airbag Tarps FAQ
Are parachute tarps waterproof?
They are coated and highly water-resistant; keep them tight and use edge protection so the coating is not abraded.
How long does a parachute tarp last?
With edge protectors and proper folding, many drivers get several years of daily use, though heavy vinyl lasts longer on abrasive loads.
Why are airbag tarps more expensive?
The specialty fabric costs more than vinyl, but drivers often consider the reduced lifting strain and faster tarping worth it.
