About Auto Towing & Hauling

Vehicles need different securement than palletised freight: tires flex, suspensions bounce and finished paint scratches easily. This section covers wheel nets and car tie-down straps, axle straps, tow and recovery chains, snatch straps, winch accessories and hauling hardware for car carriers, wreckers, rollbacks and trailer owners, with every size and price listed side by side.

Common uses

Buyers use auto towing & hauling for car haulers, rollbacks and wreckers, securing vehicles by the tires or axles and roadside towing and vehicle recovery. Secure vehicles at four points and strap the tires or axles, not body panels, so the suspension can move without loosening the tie-down.

How to choose auto towing & hauling

Match the strap or net to your tire size and the anchor fittings on your car hauler — flat hooks, snap hooks, J-hooks or E-track.

Working load limits in this section run from 1.4 Ton to 32,000 lbs. Use the working load limit — never the breaking strength — when you plan a load.

Three steps to the right choice

  1. Strap tires, not bodywork. Wheel nets and tire straps keep tension as the suspension moves.
  2. Choose fittings for your deck. Flat hooks, snap hooks, J-hooks and e-track ends suit different anchor points.
  3. Use the right strap for recovery. Recovery straps stretch to absorb energy; tow straps do not.

Materials compared

  • Steel (156 products) — Steel offers high strength and abrasion resistance; check the finish for rust protection.
  • Polyester (70 products) — Polyester webbing has low stretch, holds tension well and resists UV and moisture — the standard for tie-down and lifting straps.
  • UHMWPE (21 products) — High-density polyethylene is tough, light and does not rot or absorb water.
  • Alloy Steel (18 products) — Heat-treated alloy steel gives high strength for its size and is the material used for rated lifting chain and hardware.
  • Aluminum (17 products) — Aluminum is light and corrosion-resistant, which makes it easy to handle and install.

Specifications to compare

  • Working load limit (WLL) — the maximum load the item is rated to carry in normal service. For cargo securement, the WLLs of all tie-downs on a load must add up to at least half the cargo weight (FMCSA 49 CFR 393.106).
  • Breaking strength — the force at which the item fails in testing. It is not a working rating — always plan with the WLL, which is set well below breaking strength.
  • End fitting — the hardware at the end of the strap or chain. Match it to your anchor points — flat hooks for flatbed rub rails, wire or snap hooks for D-rings, grab hooks for chain, E-track fittings for E-track.
  • Surface finish — the coating that protects the metal. Galvanized and zinc finishes resist rust; powder coat adds a tough painted layer.

Before you buy

  • Add up the working load limits of all tie-downs against the cargo weight.
  • Check that the end fitting matches the anchor points on your trailer.
  • Make sure the length reaches over the load with tail left to tension.

Auto Towing & Hauling FAQ

How many straps do I need to haul a car?

Use at least four tie-downs, one per corner, rated so their combined working load limit is at least half the vehicle weight.

Wheel net or axle strap?

Wheel nets and tire straps hold the tire and let the suspension work; axle straps wrap the axle or frame for vehicles where tire straps will not fit.

Can I use a tow strap for recovery?

No. Tow straps have hooks and little stretch; recovery (snatch) straps stretch to absorb kinetic energy. Use each only for its purpose.
