How to choose the right sling
Start with the load weight, then choose a sling whose rated capacity for your hitch (vertical, choker or basket) exceeds it. Allow for sling angle and pick a length that keeps the angle above 60° where possible.
Specifications explained
- Vertical capacity: 16,800 lbs — the rated load for a single sling leg hanging straight up and down.
- Choker capacity: 13,400 lbs — the rated load when the sling is wrapped around the load and passed through itself; it is lower than the vertical rating.
- Basket / angled capacity: 23,800 lbs — the rated load when the sling cradles the load or legs run at an angle. Lower angles increase the tension in each leg, so always use the rating for your actual angle.
- Capacity: 33,600 lbs — the rated load for this item in the use it is designed for.
- Material: Polyester — Polyester webbing has low stretch, holds tension well and resists UV and moisture — the standard for tie-down and lifting straps.
Before you buy
- Know the load weight and the hitch you will use.
- Check the rated capacity for that hitch and the sling angle.
- Confirm fittings and pin sizes are compatible with your rigging.
Safety and care
- Inspect slings before every lift; remove any with cuts, burns, broken stitching or a missing tag.
- Protect slings from sharp edges with wear pads or corner protectors.
- Never stand under a suspended load.
To complete your setup, many buyers also look at shackles, crosby® lifting hooks and corner & edge protectors — see the suggestions below.
