How to choose the right 4-inch winch strap
Match the strap width to your trailer winches (most flatbeds use 4-inch), then choose the end fitting — flat hooks for rub rails, chain extensions for heavier anchoring. Longer straps cover taller loads.
Specifications explained
- End fitting: Flat Hook — the hardware at the end of the strap or chain. Match it to your anchor points — flat hooks for flatbed rub rails, wire or snap hooks for D-rings, grab hooks for chain, E-track fittings for E-track.
- Working load limit (WLL): 5,400 lbs — the maximum load the item is rated to carry in normal service. For cargo securement, the WLLs of all tie-downs on a load must add up to at least half the cargo weight (FMCSA 49 CFR 393.106).
- Strap width: 4 Inch — wider webbing generally carries a higher rating and spreads pressure over more of the load.
Before you buy
- Add up the working load limits of all tie-downs against the cargo weight.
- Check that the end fitting matches the anchor points on your trailer.
- Make sure the length reaches over the load with tail left to tension.
Safety and care
- Wind the strap evenly on the winch and keep at least a few wraps on the drum.
- Use edge protectors on every corner the strap crosses.
- Retire straps with cuts, abrasion or damaged hooks.
To complete your setup, many buyers also look at corner & edge protectors, winch bars and flatbed winch strap winders — see the suggestions below.
