How to choose the right ratchet turnbuckle kit
Match the binder to your chain size and grade. Ratchet binders tension gradually with less kickback; lever binders are quicker but store more energy in the handle.
Specifications explained
- Working load limit (WLL): 6,600 lbs — the maximum load the item is rated to carry in normal service. For cargo securement, the WLLs of all tie-downs on a load must add up to at least half the cargo weight (FMCSA 49 CFR 393.106).
- Breaking strength: 26,400 lbs — the force at which the item fails in testing. It is not a working rating — always plan with the WLL, which is set well below breaking strength.
- Material: Steel — Steel offers high strength and abrasion resistance; check the finish for rust protection.
Before you buy
- Match chain size and grade to the binders and hooks you already use.
- Confirm the working load limit covers your share of the cargo weight.
- Measure the length needed to reach anchor points on both sides.
Safety and care
- Keep your body clear of the handle path when releasing a lever binder.
- Secure the handle after tensioning so it cannot flip open.
- Do not use cheater bars unless the binder is rated for one.
