How to choose the right lifting beams and spreader bar
Measure the width or height you need to span and check the bar’s adjustment range and rating.
Specifications explained
- Working load limit (WLL): 5 Ton — the maximum load the item is rated to carry in normal service. For cargo securement, the WLLs of all tie-downs on a load must add up to at least half the cargo weight (FMCSA 49 CFR 393.106).
- Breaking strength: 5.5 Ton — the force at which the item fails in testing. It is not a working rating — always plan with the WLL, which is set well below breaking strength.
- Thickness: 10 mm — thicker material resists abrasion and cutting better but adds weight.
- Surface finish: Painted — the coating that protects the metal. Galvanized and zinc finishes resist rust; powder coat adds a tough painted layer.
- Material: Carbon Structural Steel — Steel offers high strength and abrasion resistance; check the finish for rust protection.
Before you buy
- Know the load weight and the hitch you will use.
- Check the rated capacity for that hitch and the sling angle.
- Confirm fittings and pin sizes are compatible with your rigging.
Safety and care
- Seat both ends fully before loading.
- Check bars after the first miles of a trip.
- Replace bent or damaged bars.
To complete your setup, many buyers also look at shackles, slings and crosby® lifting hooks — see the suggestions below.
