How to choose the right crosby® shackle
Pick the shackle by working load limit and pin size. Anchor (bow) shackles handle multi-leg loads; chain (D) shackles suit in-line pulls. Screw-pin types are for temporary rigging; bolt-type for long-term or rotating loads.
Specifications explained
- Working load limit (WLL): 6.5 Ton — the maximum load the item is rated to carry in normal service. For cargo securement, the WLLs of all tie-downs on a load must add up to at least half the cargo weight (FMCSA 49 CFR 393.106).
- Breaking strength: 39 Ton — the force at which the item fails in testing. It is not a working rating — always plan with the WLL, which is set well below breaking strength.
- Throat opening: 1.44 inch — the gap at the mouth of a hook, which determines what fittings and rigging fit into it.
- Pin diameter: 1.02 inch — the size of the shackle pin; it must fit the eye or hardware you are connecting to.
- Safety factor: 6:1 — the ratio between breaking strength and working load limit (for example 3:1 or 5:1). A higher factor means more margin for shock loading and wear.
- Surface finish: Galvanized — the coating that protects the metal. Galvanized and zinc finishes resist rust; powder coat adds a tough painted layer.
- Material: Carbon Steel — Steel offers high strength and abrasion resistance; check the finish for rust protection.
Before you buy
- Know the load weight and the hitch you will use.
- Check the rated capacity for that hitch and the sling angle.
- Confirm fittings and pin sizes are compatible with your rigging.
Safety and care
- Load shackles in line with the pin and body, never side-loaded beyond the maker’s rating.
- Fully seat the pin and use a cotter or nut on bolt types.
- Replace shackles that are bent, cracked or worn.
