How to choose the right rigging hardware
Match the hook to the chain size and grade, and check the throat opening fits your fittings. Grab hooks hold a chain link; slip and clevis hooks suit other hardware.
Specifications explained
- Working load limit (WLL): 7 Ton — the maximum load the item is rated to carry in normal service. For cargo securement, the WLLs of all tie-downs on a load must add up to at least half the cargo weight (FMCSA 49 CFR 393.106).
- Breaking strength: 28 Ton — the force at which the item fails in testing. It is not a working rating — always plan with the WLL, which is set well below breaking strength.
- Surface finish: Powder Coated — the coating that protects the metal. Galvanized and zinc finishes resist rust; powder coat adds a tough painted layer.
- Chain grade: G80 — the strength class of the chain. Grade 70 is the standard for cargo securement; Grade 80, 100 and 120 alloy chains are stronger for their size and are the grades used for overhead lifting.
- Material: Alloy Steel — Heat-treated alloy steel gives high strength for its size and is the material used for rated lifting chain and hardware.
