How to choose the right severe duty tie-down

Pick the width and rating first: add up the WLL of every strap so the total is at least half the cargo weight, then choose an end fitting that matches your anchor points. Use edge protectors where webbing crosses sharp corners.

Specifications explained

  • End fitting: Delta Ring — the hardware at the end of the strap or chain. Match it to your anchor points — flat hooks for flatbed rub rails, wire or snap hooks for D-rings, grab hooks for chain, E-track fittings for E-track.
  • Working load limit (WLL): 6,670 lbs — the maximum load the item is rated to carry in normal service. For cargo securement, the WLLs of all tie-downs on a load must add up to at least half the cargo weight (FMCSA 49 CFR 393.106).
  • Breaking strength: 20,000 lbs — the force at which the item fails in testing. It is not a working rating — always plan with the WLL, which is set well below breaking strength.
  • Length: 30 Feet — make sure the strap reaches over the load and back to the anchor with enough tail to tension properly.
  • Strap width: 4 Inch — wider webbing generally carries a higher rating and spreads pressure over more of the load.
  • Surface finish: Zinc Coating — the coating that protects the metal. Galvanized and zinc finishes resist rust; powder coat adds a tough painted layer.
  • Material: Polyester — Polyester webbing has low stretch, holds tension well and resists UV and moisture — the standard for tie-down and lifting straps.

Safety and care

  • Inspect webbing before each use and retire straps with cuts, burns, melted fibres or damaged hardware.
  • Keep the ratchet handle closed and locked after tensioning, and re-check tension at your first stop.
  • Never exceed the working load limit printed on the tag.

To complete your setup, many buyers also look at corner & edge protectors, e-track accessories and ratchet tie down straps — see the suggestions below.
