How to choose the right flatbed winch kit
Pick the width and rating first: add up the WLL of every strap so the total is at least half the cargo weight, then choose an end fitting that matches your anchor points. Use edge protectors where webbing crosses sharp corners.
Specifications explained
- Working load limit (WLL): 5,500 lbs — the maximum load the item is rated to carry in normal service. For cargo securement, the WLLs of all tie-downs on a load must add up to at least half the cargo weight (FMCSA 49 CFR 393.106).
- Breaking strength: 16,500 lbs — the force at which the item fails in testing. It is not a working rating — always plan with the WLL, which is set well below breaking strength.
- Surface finish: Trivalent Chrome Plating — the coating that protects the metal. Galvanized and zinc finishes resist rust; powder coat adds a tough painted layer.
- Material: Steel — Steel offers high strength and abrasion resistance; check the finish for rust protection.
Before you buy
- Add up the working load limits of all tie-downs against the cargo weight.
- Check that the end fitting matches the anchor points on your trailer.
- Make sure the length reaches over the load with tail left to tension.
Safety and care
- Inspect webbing before each use and retire straps with cuts, burns, melted fibres or damaged hardware.
- Keep the ratchet handle closed and locked after tensioning, and re-check tension at your first stop.
- Never exceed the working load limit printed on the tag.
